Minutes of Last Meeting:
Were accepted as a true and correct record upon the proposition of Dennis Hartley and seconded by John Jenkins.
Matters Arising: None
Executive Committee Report:
The Executive Report has been widely circulated and there were no questions. The report was proposed by John Outram, seconded by Bob Roberts and agreed by the meeting.
President’s Report
My second year as President has been even more hectic and enjoyable than the first and my thanks to you all for your help assistance during both this year and my first.
Finance
The state of the Union’s finances is good and as always well managed, controlled and reported by our Treasurer, Ian Neal.
The major additional cost for this year was the Boys’ County finals but even with that we didn’t fall into the red – thanks in no small part due to the additional donations received from some of our clubs.
The major expense in the next two years will be the Centenary in 2013 but this has been planned and budgeted for already.
Thanks to our Ian for all his work.
Golf Partnership
This continues to thrive and is now starting its third year. It is now well established throughout the County. It is hoped that the results of its work, especially in its encouragement to children to take up the game, will start to provide the County with additional players, who have the interest and ability to become a part of our County Coaching structure for our teams of the future.
Thanks to Peter for his Chairmanship of the Partnership
Teams
Our men’s teams under Captains Sam Humpston and Neil Ibbotson maintained their league positions achieved in the league in 2009.
I don’t want to tread into the Captain’s territory and steal his report, but I must say that the increased confidence the players got in 2009 has stayed with them through 2010. I am sure that with the influx of very talented juniors coming of age into the first and second team, that success in both leagues should not be too far away.
My thanks to Sam and Neil for their leadership over the last three years.
Seniors
The Seniors played 10 matches under the Captaincy of David Wall, winning 4 drawn 1 and lost 5. Virtually the same as last year.
26 players represented the County through the year from all corners of the County. Again an excellent level of interest.
Dave Wall retires after two good years as Captain and Keith Brown takes over.
Juniors
I must include comments on our Juniors since their successes have been without doubt the highlight of my two years.
Last year they won the Midlands League West at U18 level.
This year their successes continued in all the leagues being undefeated at all age levels – U14, U16 and U18. Losing only in mixed age matches. Although not losing a match the U18s came 2nd in a tight league.
But their qualification at Horsley Lodge for the EGU’s Boys’ County Finals at Berwick was tremendous achievement for them and it is the first time our juniors have made the England Junior County Finals. And it was a splendid week at Goswick – a magnificent links course. The Boys acquitted themselves well if ultimately unsuccessfully and in golfing company of the highest standard in England. But a great experience and learning process for all involved.
The EGU President, Elwyn Ellis, and John Walker from the tournament committee took time to comment to both John Jenkins and myself on the boys’ turnout, excellent sportsmanship and demeanour throughout the tournament over three days. It was a great privilege to be there.
We now have a full U18 International in Nick Newbold and four other players in the EGUs National and Regional Junior Squads – Bradley Moore, Josh Thorley, Mark Porter (our English Schools U16 champion) and Ben Higgins. It’s looking as good for Derbyshire as any other Midlands County.
Joe Biggs proved an inspirational Captain and has retired handing over the reins to Luke Burton from Ormonde Fields.
Coaching
The great change over the last two years in coaching has been the new coaching structure. This is now fully in place and headed up by Nigel Furniss. All the positions are filled with our county’s able volunteers but there is always room for more helpers. Something that I have always been keen to improve was the involvement with our County’s Professionals. They were all invited to assist and I am pleased to say that the response was excellent. Many have joined our coaching panel in various capacities. Similar structures are generally in place in other Counties across the Country and we needed to move ahead so as to not be left behind. Our junior Organiser, John Jenkins, has certainly thrown himself fully into the job and our boys’ achievements this year have made him hungry for more.
My thanks to John and all those involved.
County Card Scheme
The scheme has now up and running through Peter and in its first year raised £4,000. This is a tremendous start but will always need to publicise it to ensure that our members both know about it and join.
Dinner
The change of venue last year has been a success and repeated this year. We are very well looked after at the Gateway Centre by Keith Loring. Numbers attending has gone up slightly this year and hopefully this trend will continue in the coming years.
Other highlights of this year
Ashbourne were runners up in the UK Golf Mark Club of the year award following the success of Chapel and Tapton in the previous two. This award has only been going for three years and our Clubs have come 1st, 1st and now 2nd.
John Barker from Tapton achieved recognition for all his work with their juniors and has received the Golf Development Award for the whole UK for 2010.
Both are remarkable achievements and go to show the talent both at individual and club level in our County.
Conclusion
It has been a tremendous couple of years in my golfing life and many thanks for allowing me the opportunity.
It has been a great honour to represent the County across the Midlands and in England. But all made easy with the assistance and advice I have received from the Executive, its officers and all our Captains and players – especially our able Secretary and our Past Presidents.
Derbyshire Golf has changed dramatically over the last two years and with the success of our youngsters I expect it to continue to improve with more achievements at individual, Club and County levels in all age groups.
Finally I wish my successor, John Outram, all success over the next two years leading up to and including his Centenary Dinner.
I look forward to supporting Derbyshire Golf for many years to come – that is until the black asterisk goes against my name in the list of Presidents on page 2 of the accounts.
Thank you
Captains Report
The Captain reported that he nothing to add as the results for the year were in the report. He thanked the meeting for the honour of Captaining Derbyshire for the last three years and wished his and Neil Ibbotson’s successors Paul Tatlow and Danny Walker every success this season.
Junior Delegates Report
My first year as Junior Organiser can only be described as one of frenetic activity coupled with a huge learning curve but with satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. The targets we set for the season were to win the Midland Group qualifying on home soil and to repeat the MGU West league success of 2009.
The highlights of the year were undoubtedly qualifying at Horsley Lodge and representing the Midlands Group at the English Boys County finals for the first time in our history. The talent on show was astonishing and our boy’s achievement in qualifying and competing at this level should be celebrated. They have raised the bar for our future players and for us to excel at this level we must aim to qualify more often. Magnificent support was given from our first appointed coaches Ian Walley and Craig Pollard who paved the way for the recently implemented Coaching Structure which we hope will get us to the heights we desire so that we can compete year on year at this elite standard.
On the league scene, our team was undefeated with two wins and two halve matches. This saw us come agonisingly close to winning the league, losing out by a single point to Staffordshire. Nonetheless a great team performance and a number of players with a number of years to play at this level gained valuable experience.
The U16 team went from strength to strength going unbeaten after an early season loss to Staffs, returning season match statistics of won 4, halved one and lost one. This is very pleasing and shows some excellent emerging talent.
The U14’s again competed admirably finishing runners up in both the Midland 4 and 10 County events.
Individual mentions must go to; Nick Newbold for his selection to the England 6 man squad in Morocco and his inclusion in the England U18 squad. Mark Porter on winning the English Schools Championship and subsequent invitation to represent England, which will hopefully lead to inclusion in the EGU U16 squad. Craig Young on winning the Derbyshire Amateur Championship. Bradley Moore on winning the Kedleston club championship aged 12 and his continued inclusion in Midland and hopefully England coaching squads. Josh Thorley on his continued representative recognition and hopefully inclusion in the England U16 squad.
Domestically; Tom Hamson on winning the Boys Championship. Jack Cope who won the matchplay Championship and Chapel en le Frith GC junior team who won the Junior League and represented the DUGC in the EGU Junior Champion Club.
Please note all the full results for Junior Matches and Tournaments appear on the DUGC web site including the EGU Regional Qualifying scores. The Boys championship finals results and photos are in the EGU Championships site.
Many lessons have been learned through the season especially about the quality we need and the strength in depth needed if we are to continue this epoch in Derbyshire Junior Golf. The coaching structure for next year will be vital and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the DUGC for its vision and supporting County Junior Golf so proactively especially our coaching ambitions in 2011.
It would be remiss of me not to pass on congratulations for a great season and thank him for a job well done to the outgoing Junior Captain, Joe Biggs of Chevin GC. He has been a true ambassador and a credit to the DUGC on and off the course. I wish him all golfing success in the future, as I do all the boys who have moved into the men’s ranks, and they should all represent the Union in years to come proudly in the County 1st and 2nd teams.
I am delighted that Luke Burton has accepted the Junior Boys Captaincy for this year, we have much to do but with the new management and coaching structures in place we are set for season and raring to go.
Well in conclusion what a year it was. Thank you again to all those that have helped me and supported the County teams throughout the season I am not going to embarrass anyone as they know who they are. Their work and support is greatly appreciated and without them the players and teams could not be as successful as we have been.
